Welcome to Key Stage 1 and 2 The Willows
Key Stage 1 & 2 Curriculum
The Willows KS1 and 2 offers a mainstream curriculum differentiated to the varied needs and abilities of each pupil. Cross curricular and outdoor learning are used when ever possible to allow pupils to practice their skills in a real life environment which includes access to a Forest Schools programme that is currently under development. Pupils can also consolidate academic and social development from previous years and are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning.
Numeracy and Literacy
Lessons follow the National Framework and incorporate opportunities to revisit past learning as well as developing new skills.
In Literacy, confidence in reading, writing, speaking and listening is encouraged throughout the curriculum in order to enable the children to consolidate learning and development. Read, Write Inc Phonics is being introduced for Yrs 1 – 4 and Fresh Start is currently being developed for years 5 – 6.
In Numeracy, considerable importance is attached to the children achieving and understanding mathematical processes, concepts and skills and to be able to use these strategies with confidence. Support is given to address misconceptions from prior learning.
To enable the acquisition of a systematic, scientific approach to learning, developing useful knowledge, skills and attitudes about the world in which we live. Science experience is presented to the children in a practical, relevant context. Systematic inquiry, analysis of problems, formation of ideas, their testing and modification are encouraged through project work, designed to arouse the children’s natural curiosity.
These are often taught as part of a creative curriculum which also encourages skills learnt in Literacy and Numeracy. Previous topics have included: recycling, Ecuador and space with many lines of enquiry developed by the pupils themselves.
Pupil’s emotional development is supported and encouraged through lessons such as SEAL, PHSCE and Zippy’s Friends. These values are incorporated throughout the ethos of the provision.
